From time to time, the gods of the Southern Lands are born as mortals and walk among their people, possessing strange magic and a habit of attracting trouble.

Nadika Dao-Jin returns to the capital shortly after the revolution to restore the king to the throne. Not everyone, however, is as pleased by the change as her family. Someone is sending assassins against the king.

Nadi, with her unwanted powers over shadows and metal, is recruited into the King’s Guard. But then her cousin disappears, and her parents are murdered.

Now she must decide whether to save the king’s life and her country or risk losing herself to her magic.
