The Short Story

4 April 2011 | Filed Under Tales from the Author's Desk

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not a fan of short stories. I avoid them like the plague. Twenty pages is not enough time for me to care about a character and their problems. And if it is, it’s not enough time for me to hang out with them.

A short story is a good way to learn about writing a novel, because it’s like a novel on a smaller scale. It has all the same elements. That’s why fiction writing classes teach you how to write short stories instead of parts of novels.

But if I don’t like reading them, why would I want to write them? It is a conundrum.

I know some people like to write short stories. And I’ve been told numerous times that they don’t sell – although I think they meant journals vs. anthologies.

I didn’t really have a point, I was just sharing my thoughts. Any you’d like to contribute?
